Culture Shock Of A Third-world Virgin Boy

When I as an early teen boy first visiting Hong Kong for holiday, it gives me a mind-blowing culture shock. I am NOT dumbfounded by the state-of-the-art MTR railway system that says everything three times of which only one makes much sense to me, nice and clean streets with peculiar English names accompanied by even more peculiar Chinese ones, or the night skyline on the Hong Kong Island that screams patriotic brand names across the Victoria Harbour...Spectacular? Yes, but none shock me as much as the locals, the long-segregated bothers and sisters.

Hong Kong people, in the eyes of this third-world Virgin Boy, deserve belonging to another race. Somewhere near the Japanese or South Koreans, but definitely not the everyday Chinese people expected of what they should be like. See, in Mainland China, we have long divided ourselves into either city dwellers and rural people. And you can tell the latter from the former by appearance, garments and mastery of standard Putonghua. In Hong Kong, however, everyone seems even more urban than the urbanest people in other Chinese metropolises.

Good-looking boys and girls abound. Neatly dressed, clean haired boys who would have been chick magnets of the whole school roam the streets, hanging out with other chick magnet boys. Even construction workers, cart pushers, wet market hawkers are good looking as shit. Whereas in mainland China, such jobs are normally taken by rural migrant workers who, Dear God, are not hired for their aesthetic value.

The real shock for Virgin Boy is, unsurprisingly, from the opposite sex. Cute schoolgirls chitchatting and giggling while waiting for bus, hot office ladies just getting off work with their breasts bouncing up and down while strutting all look “Japanese”. By Japanese I mean Japanese Adult Videos, more commonly known as AV, from which Virgin Boy gets his most impression of the nationality. Yeah, those local women and girls are like in the early part of a damn long AV, before things get surreally herkyjerky, tension and suspense gradually building up. Too bad for Virgin Boy, there is no forward button.

Before the trip I have been a city dweller all my life and always considered myself higher class than rural workers, who are the majority of the Chinese population but enjoy minority treatment everywhere they go. But in Hong Kong, with Mandarin drawing more looks than English, people more “urban” everywhere, I feel self conscious and rural and even foreign in my own fucking country. This is the culture shock Virgin Boy first experiences.
